Lots of progress has been made on the Hopkins Hall renovations. All of the windows are now up on the side of the building facing 17th Avenue. The bricks on the back of the side of the building facing 17th Avenue are all removed and window frames are up. Most of the windows have also gone up. The interior of the hallways, studios and photo labs are currently being painted. Some of the interior lighting is also hooked up and is connected to power. The windows facing the Oval have also been replaced. Progress is also being made on the Art and Technology area and lighting studios on the first floor. With this progress, different parts of the interior are now going to be start being worked on.

3pi Coaster Bot

May 28th, 2010

Time to write about another robotics project I did! Make hosted a robot building contest, where you had to build a robot that was able to navigate around an area on its own. However, this project had to use a CD or disc somewhere in the robot. I took the wheels off my 3pi robot, and taped them to a blank CD for wheels! ;)

I taped the wheels that came with the 3pi to the blank CD, and I had to try taping it several ways before I found a way that worked well. Once I did that, I was able to upload some of the line-tracking code to the 3pi.

Once that was all done, I was able to make the 3pi navigate through a maze, and since the coasters made it taller, it was able to track a wider area (with a few ajustments).

I didn’t win, but I still qualified, I get a Maker’s Notebook, and it made it on the Make site today! :D

Thanks to everyone who helped! :)

iPad-powered Arduino

May 23rd, 2010

So, after much, much waiting, I finally got my iPad Camera Connection Kit! When I got it, I wanted to discover what it could be used for (which many have already found many uses for it). Anyways, I plugged in my Auduino with a USB cable into the USB adapter, and it worked! :D

I was able to power LEDs with it, but a servo required too much power. :( The iPad will also display a message that the attached USB device isn’t supported, but it will still work anyway. You’ll also need to make sure the iPad isn’t sleeping, otherwise, it will power off. This also doesn’t work on an iPhone.

Anyways, it’s lots of fun, and if you have an iPad and a Camera Connection Kit, you should try it and see what you can do with it!

Awaiting the iPad

April 2nd, 2010

Tomorrow is iPad day!  Since I’ve been waiting for the iPad, here’s what I’ve done so far.

Apps:

I already have about 10 apps for the iPad. I’ve downloaded Pages, Numbers, and Keynote and iBooks. I’ve also downloaded a few other new iPad apps, and a few updates for some existing iPhone apps that are now universal apps.

Accessories:

When I ordered my iPad, I also ordered an Apple iPad Case. For the keyboard, I’m going to use the Apple Wireless Keyboard I’ve already had for a few months.

I’m having my iPad shipped directly, and will be waiting.

iPad day is finally here TOMORROW, and I sure am excited! I’ll be posting more about it soon, and more about robots too! Stay posted. :)

Robot building!

March 15th, 2010

I’ve finally started my new robot! Currently, I just have and Arduino connected to a few servos (which will be for the legs and arms), but  I plan to get more of it completed this week. Stay posted, I hope I have more very soon!
